This Caribbean country has experienced a national blackout which government representatives stated was linked to a failure in the electricity transmission system.

During the early afternoon, an malfunction at a substation caused a countrywide interruption to energy distribution, the state-owned electricity company reported.

Authorities confirmed a thorough inquiry would be carried out to determine the source and that work were under way to promptly return electricity.

The Caribbean nation, which is home to approximately 11,000,000 inhabitants, has been suffering smaller blackouts in the past few weeks.

Spokespersons at the national electricity provider confirmed generation units in two major power plants had shut down, causing "a chain reaction of malfunctions" in additional sections of the system.

Local media indicated the metro and cable car in the capital, the capital city, had ceased operation and passengers had to be removed during the nationwide power failure on the specific date.

There have also been reports of confusing circumstances on the country's roads. Online commentators described electricity failures in different regions of the island, but electricity and internet were operational in specific areas.

Last month, Hurricane Melissa was blamed for four deaths in the region, after the major hurricane affected the region.

This island country is a major vacation spot. Historically controlled by Spain, the Dominican Republic occupies the territory with its neighbor, a previous French territory.
