In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
