Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
