The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
